World’s Largest Jesus Statue at Home in Poland

Worlds Largest Jesus Statue

Roman Catholic priests consecrated what local officials claim is the world’s largest statue of Jesus Christ in the presence of hundreds of Polish faithful on Sunday. Swiebodzin, a Polish town has officially unveiled the world’s largest Jesus statue. The beautiful statue of Jesus surpasses the “Christ the Redeemer”, the famous Christ sculpture in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro.

Local business people hope the monument, which was completed on Nov. 6, will attract tourists and pilgrims and give the area an economic boost. But some Poles accuse the priest who created it of megalomania and say its grandiosity violates Christ’s spirit of humility.

The statue itself is 108 feet (33 meters) high (one meter for every year Jesus lived.) A golden crown adds two more meters, while a huge mound it sits on takes the whole height to just over 167 feet (51 meters). Rio’s statue is 125 feet (38 meters) tall.

Thousands gathered on Sunday at the statue waving Polish and European Union flags. Organizers said some 20,000 people, including tourists from around the world, were in attendance.

Made of plaster and fiberglass and weighing about 440 tonne’s, its construction took five years. About 15,000 Christian pilgrims and tourists streamed into the western Polish town on Sunday for the unveiling
