Thanksgiving travel will rise this year AAA says

After years of decline, the number of Americans traveling for Thanksgiving is expected to significantly increase. In fact, AAA is projecting that 42.2 million Turkey hungry Americans will travel at least 50 miles between Wednesday, Nov. 24, and Sunday, Nov. 28. That is an 11.4% increase over last year.

AAA spokesman said: “Many are in a better financial position this Thanksgiving than a year ago,” said Darbelnet. “This improvement, along with a strong desire to spend time with friends and family, is expected to propel a significant increase in Thanksgiving travel.”

United Airlines spokesman Mike Trevino said the airline is expecting a larger than normal influx of travelers, but didn’t have specific figures on passengers between the peak traveling days of Wednesday through Nov. 28.

This means same old, same old: Get to the airport early.

“For travel within the U.S., we’re recommending customers arrive two hours in advance and for international travel they should arrive two and a half hours before,” Trevino said. “That’s an hour more than usual.”

While unemployment remains high and jobs growth is stubbornly slow, Darbelnet said this year’s expected boost in holiday travel is a sign things have improved considerably.

Still, this year’s optimistic travel projections are almost 30% below the 2005 peak, when 58.6 million travelers hit the road to celebrate Thanksgiving
